Following Christ in Baptism
Baptism is an outward sign of an inward faith. Therefore, only those who have received Jesus as Lord and Savior should be baptized. It symbolizes the death and burial of our old life as we are immersed in water; and as we are brought up out of the water it symbolizes that we are new creations, like new babies coming out of the womb; raised into a new life in Jesus Christ.
“For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.” Colossians 2:12 NLT
It identifies us with Christ’s death and burial. As we go down into the water, we declare ourselves dead to our old way of living. (Acts 2:38; Romans 6:3-5)
It also identifies us with Christ’s resurrection. As we are coming up out of the water, we declare that He has given us power to live a new life full of meaning and purpose.
Why Should I Be Baptized?
- In obedience to the command of Jesus Christ. (Matthew 28:19)
- It publicly demonstrates that I really am a believer (Acts 19:3-5).
“Those who gladly received His word were baptized…” Acts 2:41
